Teak Marine USA was retained to refurbish and replace the teak decks on the M/Y Lady Pegasus in Fort Lauderdale.

Teak-Deck-Project-MY-Lady-Pegasus-Before

The full scope of this job was as follows:

PART 1

Re-seam the Flybridge, 19 steps, Aft Deck and lower walkways. This involved cutting and routing the seams to remove the old caulk. Sanding and cleaning the seams before re-caulking. Thereafter the decks were sanded to restore them to a beautiful golden color.

PART 2

Installing new decks on the bow, upper walkways and swim platform. This involved the following steps:

  • Building a template of the decks
  • Rip-out and removal of the bow and upper walkways, as well as two steps and the swim platform
  • Fairing and sanding the decks to allow for proper camber and drainage
  • Fabricating and installing new 5/8″ thick decks and steps

during

At the Owner’s request the work was carried out behind his House in the Southport area. This creates potential issues in terms of noise and dust. In order to minimize these elements as much as possible, we built a tent covering the bow, upper walkways and swim platform. This combined with our vacuum attached tools eliminated the risk of dust becoming an issue for the owner, his crew or neighbors, as well as the potential risk of water contamination. We were also sure to remove our trash each evening so that it did not become an eyesore for the owner or neighbors. The tent also provided a dry environment and for the most part stood up well against heavy rainfall and fairly strong winds at that time. Ongoing maintenance kept the tent in good shape throughout the project.

After the commencement of work, the Captain changed the design and shape of two bow hatches. As a result, once those hatches had been installed, we rebuilt templates of this area to incorporate the new design into the deck that we were in the process of building  (See the oval shaped hatch photo below).

With regard to Lady Pegasus, she is a 74-foot Cheoy Lee Sport Motor Yacht. Built in 2002 she accommodates 8 plus crew. Captain Evan Calleia and his dedicated and professional crew keep her ship shape and Bristol fashion at all times. The new and refinished decks compliment the overall appearance of this fine vessel and will no doubt bring pleasure to its owner and guests for years to come.

How To Re-seam Your Teak Deck

Over time the caulk on a teak deck may become weathered or worn.  This may be due to a number of factors, including:

  1. Age of the teak deck and caulk used.
  2. An inferior caulk product was used on the teak deck.
  3. The seams with the teak deck were not properly filled with caulk.
  4. Over use of aggressive two-part acid washes.

When re-seaming a teak deck it is importing to properly clean and remove the existing caulk from your seams.

This is commonly done in one of three ways:

  1. You can use a razor knife to cut the caulk seam on both sides. Be careful not to cut into the side of the teak baton.  Once you have cut the sides of the caulk, you can then use a reefing hook to pull out the old caulk seam.
  2. Another way to remove the caulk from your teak deck is with a trim router. A Guide or straight edge should be used to ensure that you do not deviate from the seam.
  3. Alternatively, you can use a saw such as a Porter Cable Model 314 Trim Saw with a modified blade designed specifically for re-seaming teak decks. Great care should be taken when using a saw such as this.  Once again, it is strongly recommended that you use a guide or jig in order to prevent unnecessary damage.

Once the old caulk has been removed, you should use a seam sanding hand tool to remove any residue from the old caulk and to ensure that your seam lines are true.  Thereafter, you should clean your seams using acetone and a rag.

Once your seams have been sanded and cleaned, you are ready for caulking.  There are those that recommend inserting a thin tape line in each seam.  However, with today’s technically advanced, hard wearing and flexible marine caulks; this is not really necessary.

Depending upon the size of your re-seam project you can simply caulk the seams or tape the surface of the teak deck, either side of the seams in order to reduce the amount of clean up or sanding that will be required.

When caulking the seams, make sure you use a quality Marine Caulk such a Teak Marine USA, Inc.’s UV Resistant Teak Deck Caulk .  You can apply the caulk using a hand caulk gun, a battery operated caulk gun or an air caulk gun.

caulk small

Make sure that you fill the seam when caulking.  Finally use a putty knife or plastic spreader in a pulling motion along the seam to press down the caulk and ensure that the seam is completely filled.

You can then scoop up the excess to make sanding easier.  Once the caulk is fully cured (dried) you can then sand the teak deck to finish.

Teak Decks – M/Y Betty

Teak Marine USA Inc. are proud to announce that they are building New Teak Decks for the M/Y Betty.  Betty, currently undergoing a refit at Lauderdale Marine Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL is a 39 m 127 (ft) well sized composite vessel.

In 2001 Betty was formally launched  in Aarhus, Denmark by Royal Denship. The motor yacht superstructure is fabricated largely from composite. With a width of 8.11 meters or 26.6 feet the M/Y Betty has a fairly large interior.

This semi custom Royal Denship 125 Classic yacht is equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother more enjoyable cruising experience. She also features bow thrusters, making her more maneuverable at low speeds. Betty is built to comply to MCA and DNV standards.

Teak Marine USA began by building precise templates of each deck.  Teak Marine USA Inc. take great pride in the level of care and attention to detail applied when building templates.  Accurate and precise template patterns are essential when designing and building a teak deck. Templates enable faster, more accurate construction of teak decks.  They are paramount to the successful completion of this process.

The old weathered teak decks were then removed and the sub-decks faired to provide a proper camber for drainage.  Fairing is the process of creating or shaping a surface to provide a smooth line; free of low spots, hollows or bumps. The surface of the deck must be true and fair to provide proper camber and set the foundation for the successful installation of the new teak decks. Camber is best described as a slight arching, upward curve, or convexity, which one normal sees on the deck of a yacht. The correct camber enables water to run off the deck and drain properly.

Thereafter, construction of the new teak decks began at our purpose built facility located at Anglers Avenue Marine Center.  As stated above, the key to constructing accurate teak decks is the precise nature of the templates.  Accurate templates, without the room to build the new teak decks is not enough.  At Teak Marine USA Inc., we have sufficient space at our purpose built facility, to lay-out the templates and commence construction of the new teak decks.

Fort Lauderdale Teak Decks – Project Blackbird

Teak Marine USA, who specializes in Fort Lauderdale Teak Decks, recently completed sanding and detailing the teak decks aboard a Windy Dubois SR52 Blackbird yacht named M/Y Lady May II.

Lady May II is a breathtaking, stunning and quite exceptional 16.1 meter super tender.  The first SR52 Blackbird was completed in 2010 and took the Cannes International Boat Show and 2011 Monaco Yacht Show by storm.

The 4.5 metre beam means there’s plenty of space for additional seating, a sun-lounger and a hydraulic bathing ladder. The walk round teak deck also features a raised foredeck and additional seating. When the advanced anchor system, which is cleverly hidden from sight when not in use, is employed at that special bay, the SR52 quickly transforms into the perfect lunching, sunbathing, diving or swimming platform.

At the request of Rybovich Spencer Teak Marine USA Inc. were engaged to sand and detail the teak decks aboard this exciting and innovative Super Tender.

As will be seen from the pictures below, the decks were in somewhat of a weathered and worn condition.

BEFORE:

Teak Decks Project Blackbird - Before

It is not uncommon for teak decks to prematurely age or weather due to a number of reason, not least of all age and the elements. Teak Decks can go from a rich caramel color to a dull, silvery grey color quickly. We know how to clean and refurbish teak, which is a very sensitive natural material that reacts negatively to hard bristles or harsh chemicals.

Teak Marine USA are experts in restoring your aged or weathered deck back to a vibrant, aesthetically pleasing appearance. We also know to avoid any chemicals or treatments that attack the caulking materials. Again, some acid washes can harm caulk seams, which causes leaks. As teak deck specialists, we will maintain the beauty of your yacht by sanding and detailing aged, weathered and worn decks.

We are pleased to report that through care and attention to detail, we successfully restored the appearance of the teak decks aboard the M/Y Lady May II to a vibrant and aesthetically pleasing golden color.

Teak Deck Maintenance Tips

  • Teak Deck MaintenanceThe primary tool for the washing your teak decks is the best cotton mop you can find. Buy two or three when you find them, the good ones are hard to come by.
  • Be sure to use only single part teak cleaners/soaps on your teak decks. The best alternatives to these are dishwasher or powdered soaps.  Dilute them thoroughly, just a 1/4-cup in a ½ bucket of water.
  • If you must do a deeper cleaning, use a soft nylon bristle scrub brush or a Scotch Brite Pad.  Always scrub across the grain of the teak deck.  Always avoid using the hard white bristle poly brushes.
When it comes to teak decks, DO NOT…..
  • Caulk a deck without masking the wood. I’ve heard of people flooding the joints and deck with sealant and then sanding the sealant off the deck. A teak deck can last for many, many years but not if treated this way.
  • Do not sand a teak deck. One nice features of a teak deck is its non-slip quality. The grain of teak has softer and harder lines so the soft ones wear out leaving the hard ones as a perfect non-slip surface. Sanding will ruin the non-slip quality. Sanding also increases the chances for leakage.
  • Do not clean a teak deck with chemicals. In most cases, it will damage the natural teak oil and make the teak deck require more frequent cleaning. If you have to clean something on the deck, the best cleaning technique is a low powered pressure washer with a mild detergent.
